Exercise CW18.2: Back Three - Shifting to the Right
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression, Main point
Number of Players1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players
Setup
The three blue defenders A, B, and C move from the back-three base formation (in line) to the end position shown in the diagram. The ball is with player D.
Procedure
Player D plays a diagonal pass to the left. The players start from the base formation and shift into the end formation shown in the diagram. In detail: player C shifts to the ball and stops it, B tucks in laterally behind C, and A shifts laterally behind B. After each round, the players set up again in the base position and the sequence restarts.
Tip
- This is a dry run exercise without duels. It is solely for practising the running paths. - In the base formation, players stand in line. The distances between players in width are 7-12 m. When players tuck in with depth staggering, the depth distances are approx. 5 metres; the width distance stays the same. - Player C runs at top speed to the ball. The other two defenders constantly maintain their spacing. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement pattern). - The start signal for initiating the running paths is the passer's kicking motion.
