Exercise CW20.1: Corner Kick - Offensive Base Positioning
Training SetMain point
Setup
Strikers I and J are positioned side by side at the level of the 6-yard box. Centre-backs C and B as well as the right-centre midfielder G are placed at the level of the penalty area line. The left wide midfielder E is positioned centrally in the back space of the penalty area, and the left-centre midfielder F behind him, slightly offset to the left. The two fullbacks A and D stand on the two half-central positions at the level of the halfway line. Player H takes the corner kick. Player/Position legend: GK = Goalkeeper A = Left back B = Left centre-back C = Right centre-back D = Right back E = Left wide midfielder F = Left-centre midfielder G = Right-centre midfielder H = Right wide midfielder I = Left striker J = Right striker
Procedure
Player H delivers the corner centrally into the penalty area. As soon as he starts his approach, the two strikers I and J make crossing runs. J runs toward the near post, I toward the far post. The right-centre midfielder G runs to the position between the near post and the centre of the 6-yard box, and player B runs toward the far post. The right centre-back C runs into the centre between the 6-yard box and the penalty spot; player E covers the back space and tries to finish any cleared balls. Player F and the two fullbacks A and D provide cover at the back. After each corner kick, players return to their original positions and the next round starts. Striker variant: Striker I can also be positioned at the near post, where he can flick the ball on or finish directly on goal. J stands near the goalkeeper and tries to disrupt him (no foul play). Start practising without opponents to develop automatisms. Later train with opponents and of course from both sides.n
