Exercise CW26: Main Part III - 4 Defenders + 1 Central Midfielder vs. 7 Attackers
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetMain point
Number of Players10-15 players, 16-22+ players
Setup
A 5 vs. 7 game is played on one half of the field with two goals. The second goal is placed on the halfway line. The blue team is positioned in a back-four base formation with one central player in front of the defensive line. The yellow team sets up as shown in the diagram with one central playmaker, two players in the midfield half-spaces, two wingers, and two strikers. Each goal has a goalkeeper. The balls are in the yellow team's goal.
Procedure
The yellow team's task is to create scoring chances through various play patterns and attacking options, while defending their own goal against counterattacks by the blue team. The blue team defends their goal and has the option to score themselves when in possession. When defending, it is important to shift correctly and not allow any passing or shooting options. Crucially, when the ball-near defender steps up, the two nearest teammates must tuck in to form a defensive triangle. If the yellow team scores or the ball goes out of play, play restarts from the halfway line. Play should be opened with zig-zag passes. This means the strikers make counter-movements and offer themselves to the passers in the half-spaces as passing options. Use as few touches as possible. On the wings, 1 vs. 1 situations should be played with overlapping runs. For this, the wide players must be positioned on the sideline and dribble inside after receiving the ball, so the fullback behind them can overlap. Continuously play diagonal balls to initiate switches of play, thus getting the defensive block moving. The strikers constantly come toward the ball carrier, check away beforehand, and make crossing runs.
Tip
- Through passes into depth to the strikers bring the defensive line into forward movement. By then switching the ball, the defensive line is forced to shift forward to the side. This creates spaces in depth for the attacking team and the opportunity to play a diagonal ball to the now-free side. - The passers in the back space must not push too close to the front players and should always maintain 20-25 metres distance to the attackers, so they always have play in front of them and can run into the balls to quickly relay them with one touch. - Constant movement, communication, and fast, precise passing are essential. - The back four must not forget their depth staggering and must not be drawn out too far. - 2 full-size goal(s)
