Exercise CW34: 2 vs. 2 after Goalkeeper Distribution

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

On both end lines, set up a goal with a goalkeeper in each. 8 field players are divided into four groups of 2 and placed on the field and beside the goals as shown in the diagram. To mark the halfway line, place one cone on each sideline.

Procedure

The goalkeeper opens the play with a long pass to striker I, who is positioned deep in the opponent's penalty area, starts a counter-movement, and indicates the passing lane with his run. With the goalkeeper's kicking motion, player J also starts a counter-movement and runs toward strike partner I to offer an additional option. The two defenders try to prevent the attackers from scoring; if they win the duel with possession, they are allowed to launch a counterattack. After each attack, the game restarts from the other end, so each goalkeeper takes turns playing the opening pass.

Tip

- The defenders try to press the attacker as early as possible so he cannot build speed, and if possible, position their body with the shoulder forward between themselves and the attacker. - The defender tries to catch up to the attacker, or block the passing lane, or push him to the side. - The defender tries to win the duel with possession of the ball. - The defender should close off the path to goal. Stand slightly offset so the attacker must take the route farther from goal. - The attacking players try to finish the attack quickly. - The supporting attacker can use a decoy run to get free and temporarily create an overload situation. - 2 full-size goal(s)
