Exercise CW42: 3 + 1 vs. 3 in Two Zones

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

Two teams of 6 (red and blue) are formed to play against each other on a marked-out half field. On the goal line and just before the halfway line, one goal is set up on each side, each with a goalkeeper inside. The sidelines are marked with cones. To mark the halfway line, one cone is placed at each sideline of the field.

Procedure

Two teams of 6 are formed. In each zone, only 3 vs. 3 + one additional attacking player may be played. Each defensive group of 3 has 3 additional passing options in the attacking half. The player who plays the pass into the attacking zone is allowed to join the attack as the fourth player. He can also dribble into the attacking zone. The defensive back three must press the attacking players and prevent them from controlling the ball during build-up play. This creates a constant alternation with a 4 vs. 3 situation.

Tip

- The focus of this game form is on practising defensive running paths and tackling behaviour in equal-number and underload situations, with follow-up actions of -quick transition from defence to attack- and ball control after winning the ball. Additionally, the team in possession practices creating space with the goal of scoring in an overload situation. - The goal for the defenders is either to win possession or to push the ball-carrying attacker into a non-dangerous area to the side and block the passing lane to the goal/to a teammate through double-teaming or tucking in. - In attack, constant movement, fast and precise passing, and 1 vs. 1 situations are required. - 8 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
