Exercise of the Week CW25: Passing in a Square Variant III

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players

Setup

Set up a cone square. The starting position (player with ball) is double-staffed.

Procedure

The player with the ball starts the passing sequence with a pass (1) to the player directly opposite him vertically (in depth). That player lays the ball back and curves around the cone. The initiating player then runs toward the second pass and plays a direct pass halfway to the diagonally positioned player. That player in turn plays the ball to the player next to him (the one who just curved around the cone), who comes toward the pass and plays it directly to the player diagonally across from him, and so on. This creates a continuously repeating passing sequence: Lay-off + diagonal pass.

Tip

- The player expecting the ball starts his counter-movement simultaneously with the passer's kicking motion. - The wall player must adjust his running tempo to the pass speed. - Do not place the standing foot too far from the ball, and make sure players do not lean backward. - Pass timing and start timing are crucial. - Players often run faster than they pass. - Demand pass sharpness and accuracy. - 4 cones
