Exercise of the Week: Passing in a Double Diamond with Finishing at Goal

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players

Setup

Set up a goal and six cones as shown in the diagram. Starting position A is double-staffed. The balls are also there. The remaining cones are each staffed with one player.

Procedure

Player A starts the exercise with a diagonal pass to player B, who lays the ball off short to player C. C plays a diagonal pass to player D, who in turn lays it off short to E. Player E then plays a final inside-of-the-foot pass around player D into A's run; A receives the ball on the move and shoots on goal. Positions are rotated clockwise. Once every player has shot and the starting position is reached again, the exercise is repeated, this time counterclockwise.

Tip

- The respective pass receiver makes a short counter-movement as soon as the passer begins the kicking motion, then briefly moves toward the ball. - Passes should generally be played to the strong foot. - Ball reception and carrying should be one fluid motion. The ball bouncing too far away or a first touch deviating from the straight running path should be avoided. - Player B starts his sprint as soon as E begins the kicking motion. - Pay attention to correct body posture when shooting: upper body over the ball; standing foot approx. 30-40 cm to the side of the ball, foot points in the direction of the shot; arms swing along; the arm closest to the shooting leg follows the leg's backswing, the other moves forward; the eyes are on the ball at the moment of the shot. - Different shooting techniques (inside kick, instep, curving, etc.) can be practised (if necessary at the coach's instruction). - 12 cones, 2 mini goal(s)
