Forward and backwards rolls with the ball

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players

Setup

Goalkeeping coach and goalkeeper position themselves on the filed according to the diagram. The goalkeeper sits 12-16 meters in front of the coach who hold a ball in his hand.

Procedure

The goalkeeper does a backwards roll, stands up and catches a ball thrown by the coach or fellow goalkeeper. He then makes a lunge forward, throws the ball back, takes a step again and does a forward roll in the starting position. Course of movements: 1- Backwards roll 2- Ball thrown by coach 3-Catch ball 4-Ball thrown back 5-Forwards roll

Tip

- The player sits on the floor with bent legs/arms and supports himself on his palms.\n- He can start slightly crouched, takes his momentum and roll backwards over his back/head. Here his hands act as levers.\n- He lands on his legs and brings himself to an upright position.\nThe forwards roll follows from a standing crouched movement with a mini-dive forwards and finally a roll over the back/bottom.\n-During the catching movement the goalkeeper can choose, whether he takes the ball to his chest from stretched out arms, or catches it with both palms, at his highest point through pushing off with his right leg (rotating with the left).\n-During the action, the lateral thrown the arm acts like that of a javelin thrower, in that it is stretched backwards and the ball lays in the open palm. The stretched out arm is then thrown forward with force, moving just past the ear. The Stem step is important here. If the goalkeeper throws with his right, the left leg is shifted laterally forwards, if with the left, the right leg is shifted laterally forwards. You can practice the throwing technique against a safety net and afterwards, incorporate the throwing actions in shooting practice, in that a caught ball has to be thrown into a goal placed as far away as desired.\n
