Four-Zone Rondo with Players Moving Up

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 20 x 20 metres with cones and divide it into four equally large zones with further cones at the middle of the sides.

Equipment: 8 cones, bibs in two colours, balls.

Players: Two teams, one with 4 players as defenders, the other with at least 6 players. One of the defenders occupies each zone. The larger team likewise provides one player per zone; the remaining players go into any zone with the ball.

Procedure

  • The larger team plays a 4 vs 1 in one zone against the defender there.
  • As soon as every player has touched the ball, the team tries to play on into a neighbouring zone and to push up so many players that only one player stays behind in the old zone.
  • If a defender wins the ball, the whole playing area is open.
  • The defending team then tries to have each of its players touch the ball once.
  • Once this task has been completed or the larger team has won the ball back, the next round begins.

Scoring: Every change of zone earns the team with the numerical advantage one point. If every defender touches the ball once after the ball has been won, the defending team receives 5 points.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The team with the numerical advantage should create width in the playing area and show for the ball in the centre.
  • The players in the new zone have to get away from their opponents and be available for a pass.
  • Clear communication is decisive.
  • The defenders in the other zones should mark man to man and, after the ball has been won, come towards the player on the ball in order to make the required touches possible.
