Heading Duel 3 vs. 3 with Two Crossers + Goalkeeper
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetMain point
Number of Players6 - 9 players
Setup
Set up a goal and two cones as shown in the diagram. Two groups are formed. From each group, one player goes to one of the two cones. Three players from each group are in the penalty area. The remaining players are outside the penalty area. The balls are distributed between the cones.
Procedure
The blue player at the cone starts the drill with a cross into the penalty area. As soon as he begins the backswing for the cross, his three blue teammates, followed by three red opponents, start from the edge of the penalty area into the box. The blue players try to score a goal; the red players try to prevent it. Afterward, three new players from each team enter the field and the red crosser plays the ball into the penalty area, and so on.
Tip
- The crosses can be played as curving balls (banana cross) or as an instep strike (linearly rising ball trajectory). - Vary balls to the near and far post with balls into the back space. - The contact surface for the header is the forehead. - The power for the header comes from the arching of the upper body (hollow back position). - For a diving header or a header after jumping, the player pushes off with the balls of the feet. - In heading duels, ensure fair challenges (no use of elbows). - Demand body contact. - The defending players try to either get to the ball before the attacker or position themselves between the attacker and the goal to defend from there. - The goalkeeper tries to intercept the cross. - 2 cones, 1 full-size goal(s)
