Indoor Training: Colour Race with a Finish

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: On each side a starting position is marked with one cone. In front of it four large tall cones form a square of around 10 x 10 metres, in which four cones of different colours lie about 3 metres apart. Between the two squares a ball lies in front of the goal area. Behind it stands a pole, with a second ball ready behind the pole.

Equipment: 2 starting cones, 8 large tall cones, 8 coloured cones, 1 pole, balls, 1 goal, bibs in two colours.

Players: Two teams, which are assigned to the two starting positions, plus a goalkeeper. The coach stands between the two squares.

Procedure

  • The first player of each team sets off into the square on the coach's signal.
  • Immediately after the starting signal the coach calls out a colour combination of three colours.
  • The players sprint through this colour sequence.
  • They then sprint to the ball at the penalty area.
  • Whoever reaches the ball first gets the finish on goal.
  • The player in second place sprints to the pole, controls the ball lying there and takes it in their stride, dribbles to the penalty area and then also finishes.

Scoring: Play it as a team competition: which team scores the most goals, or is first to 10 points? If the player in first place scores, that counts 2 points, if the player in second place scores, that counts 1 point.

Variations:

  • The players complete the colour course with a ball and dribble around the coloured cones. They then pass back to a team-mate at the starting position. Whoever has passed first gets the right to shoot at the penalty area, the other runs the extra lap and finishes second.
  • Replace the colours with animal names, letters or city names.

Note: Drill idea by Max Schönijahn.

Tip

  • Watch for speed of action.
  • Run tightly around the coloured cones.
  • Keep encouraging and motivating the players.
  • Watch for accuracy in the finish.
