Indoor Training: Passing Combination with a Back Pass and a Finish

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: A total of 5 cones are laid out in front of the goal: on each side one cone marks the starting position A on the outside and another marks position C further inside. A shared cone in the middle in front of the goal area forms position B for both sides. In addition, on each side a tall cone stands approximately 5 metres in front of the goal line.

Equipment: 5 cones, 2 tall cones, 1 goal, bibs in two colours, balls.

Players: Two teams, spread across the positions A, B and C on each side. The first player at A has a ball, further balls lie next to it. A goalkeeper occupies the goal.

Procedure

  • Player A of the first team begins the round on that side.
  • A plays into the middle to B, who lays it off to C.
  • C plays it into the run of A, who takes the ball with the first touch.
  • A dribbles around the tall cone with close ball control and plays a ground pass into the cut-back area to B, who finishes at the goal with the goalkeeper.
  • Then every player moves on one position: B goes to A, C to B and A to C.
  • After that the second team starts the next round on the other side.

Scoring: Play as a team competition: which team scores more goals in the set time, for example 7 minutes per side?

Variations:

  • Allow one-touch passing only.
  • B and C cross and take up the near and the far post, A plays a firm, low cross.
  • A plays to C, who passes it on to B first time. B turns and plays it into the run of A, who passes straight into the cut-back area without dribbling.

Note: Drill idea by Max Schönijahn.

Tip

  • Use the appropriate foot for the back pass and do not run around the weaker foot.
  • Look for correct execution.
  • Ideally the back pass should be played to the striker outside the penalty area.
  • Look for precise passing and precise finishes.
  • Look for the use of both feet and close ball control.
  • If possible use both halves of the hall or choose larger distances between the markers.
