Indoor Training: Passing Format Variations with 3 Stations

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Set up three passing stations next to one another with a total of 12 cones, 4 cones per station spaced 10 to 15 metres apart. The four positions of a station are called A to D and lie one behind the other in a zigzag, A at the top and D at the bottom. From D the way back leads around the outside of the station back to A.

Equipment: 12 cones, several balls per station.

Players: Three groups, assigned to the stations. Positions A and D are filled by two players each wherever possible.

Procedure

Passing format 1:

  • A passes to B, who takes the ball to the side with the first touch.
  • B passes to C, who also takes the ball to the side with the first touch.
  • C passes to D, who takes the ball with the first touch and dribbles back to the starting position A.
  • As soon as the ball reaches C, the next players can start.

Passing format 2:

  • A passes to B, who lays the ball back to A.
  • B moves into the free space behind and receives the ball from A into the run.
  • B takes the ball with a short first touch and plays a one-two with C.
  • C moves into the free space behind and receives the ball into the run after the one-two.
  • C takes the ball with a short first touch and plays to D.
  • D controls the pass and dribbles back to the starting position A.
  • As soon as the ball reaches C, the next players can start.

Passing format 3:

  • A plays a one-two with B and then a forward pass to C.
  • C controls the ball and lays it off to B.
  • B plays it forward to D, who takes the ball with the first touch and dribbles back to the starting position A.
  • As soon as the ball reaches D, the next players can start.
  • Important: C moves out of the cover shadow of B and shows for the ball in an open body position, and D does the same out of the cover shadow of C.

Variations:

  • Have the passing formats 2 and 3 played one-touch.
  • The players at position D complete different dribbling tasks on the straight way back.
  • Play as a complete rotation: D of the first station dribbles to the starting position A of the second station and so on, so that the players go through all the passing formats one after the other.

Note: Drill idea by Max Schönijahn.

Tip

  • Look for accuracy and pace in the passing.
  • Look for the use of both feet.
  • During the dribbling, look for plenty of touches and close ball control.
  • Look for the preparatory movements of the players at the respective positions.
  • Vary the passing formats depending on the number of players, for example have only two formats played with two groups.
