Intercepting a High Ball

Setup

The goalkeeper coach positions himself 12-14 metres directly in front of the goalkeeper as shown in the diagram. The balls are with the goalkeeper coach.

Procedure

The goalkeeper runs toward the goalkeeper coach and receives a high ball thrown to him. He must catch it at the highest point after a one-legged takeoff from the run. Sequence of movements: (1) Start and run toward the ball. (2) One-legged takeoff. (3) Catch the ball at the highest point with arms extended. (4) Pull the ball to the chest, landing.

Tip

- The ball should be caught at the highest point. - The arms must be extended. - The goalkeeper jumps off one leg and bends the other leg (for protection). - Pull the ball to the chest as quickly as possible. - Start on the balls of the feet. - Take short steps.
