Main Part 2 Game Form 1 - Back Four Movement Patterns with 8 Players
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetMain point
Number of Players6 - 9 players
Setup
Eight players position themselves in two rows (four players per row) as shown in the diagram on one half of the field. Cones can also be used as markers for the player positions. Player E has the ball.
Procedure
Player E opens with a pass to player A. A runs to meet the ball, stops it at half distance, and stays put. The other players in the blue back four now shift and tuck in as practised in the previous exercises (see also diagram red movement path). Players B, C, and D tuck in 2-3 metres laterally to the right to provide cover in depth. Then A passes the ball back to E and returns to the base formation. Player E relays the ball sideways to player F. F passes to player B, who also comes to meet the ball. Now the same passing and movement sequence begins as before. Players A+C tuck in 2-3 metres inward to cover B (triangle formation). D also tucks in to the right inward, etc. When all 11 passing sequences are complete, the roles switch. Now the blue players pass and the red players practise the shifting/movement patterns of the back four.
Tip
- The movement patterns of the players are toward the ball, forward and back, or tucking in to the left and right. - Players often tuck in while moving forward. However, depth staggering should be achieved, and therefore the player must tuck in while running sideways and backward. - Practice the movement patterns slowly at first. Later at high speed. Then the passing is played directly. - Communicate with each other. - Clean, accurate passing. - 8 cones
