Main Part II Game Form II - Back Four Movement Patterns with 4 Players + 1 Target Player
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression
Number of Players1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players
Setup
Four players are positioned in line formation at penalty area height. Cones can also be set up as spacing markers. The passer positions himself with a ball at the centre circle.
Procedure
Target player E passes balls into the spaces in front of the back four (see arrows). The back four shifts toward the ball. The ball-nearest defender breaks out of the line formation and tries to reach the ball as early as possible, stopping it. Using player C as an example, the movement patterns become clear: Player C runs to meet the ball, stops it, and stays put. The other players in the blue back four now shift and tuck in according to the drawn movement paths. Players A and B tuck in 2-3 metres laterally to the left and D 2-3 metres to the right to cover player C in depth (triangle formation). Then C passes the ball back to E and the players return to their base formation. E then passes the ball to player D, who also comes to meet it, and players A, B, and C tuck in 2-3 metres inward to the left to cover D. When all four movement and passing sequences are complete, the exercise starts again.
Tip
- The movement patterns of the players are toward the ball, forward and back, or tucking in to the left and right. - Players often tuck in while moving forward. However, depth staggering should be achieved, and therefore the player must tuck in while running sideways and backward. - Practice the movement patterns slowly at first. Later at high speed. Then the passing is played directly. - Communicate with each other. - Clean, accurate passing - 4 cones
