Main part II - type of play II - paths of the back four with 4 players + 1 player playing a ball

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

Four players are positioned in linear formation level with the edge of the penalty area. The placement of cones can be used as distance markers. The passer of the ball positions himself in the center circle with the ball.

Procedure

The player E passes the ball in the space in front of the back four (see the arrows). The back four move in the direction of the ball. The defender closest to the ball thereby moves out of the linear formation and attempts to reach the ball at the earliest possible moment and stop it. In the example of player C the paths are obvious: Player C runs to meet the ball, stops it and stays where he is. The other players in the blue back four now shift or move in as shown by the marked paths. Players A and B thereby move 2-3 meters sideways to the left and accordingly D 2-3 meters to the right in order to safeguard player C depth wise (forming triangles). Player C then passes the ball back to E and the players go back to their basic positions. Then player E passes the ball on to player D, who runs likewise to the ball and players A, B and C move 2-3 meters to the left in order to protect D. When all four running and passing routes have been completed, the exercise starts afresh.

Tip

4 cones, - The path of the players to the ball and back as well as moving to the left and right.\n- Often players move inwards in a forward motion. Staggered depth should, however, be obtained and consequently the player must laterally move backwards.\n- First study the paths slowly. Later at a higher tempo. Then the passing ensues.\n- Speak with each other.\n- Neat, accurate passing game.\n
