Movement Patterns of the Right Outside Midfielder in a 4-4-2
Training SetProgression, Main point
Setup
The player is positioned at his midfield pressing position on the field (1).
Procedure
This exercise presents the movement patterns of the right outside midfielder/right winger when the opponent has the ball and when his own team has the ball. Depending on the ball position when the opponent has possession, the player's run describes a diagonal straight line from his original position (1) through position 2 to a tucked-in defensive position (3). The opposite running direction 3 to 1 corresponds to the movement when transitioning from opponent's possession to own team's possession.
Tip
- This is a walkthrough exercise. No tackles take place. It primarily serves to learn the movement pattern. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement sequence). - The focus is solely on the movement pattern of the right midfielder. He should be sensitised to make this run without much reaction time in a comparable situation during a match. - The individual positions (1-3) can also be marked with a cone. In this case, the player runs to each position on the coach's call or pass. - The run should always be completed at high speed.
