Offensive throw-in positioning

  • Training Set Main point

Setup

The drill is practised on one half of the field toward one goal. The left midfielder E is positioned at the sideline for the throw-in. The balls are with him. The two forwards are positioned in the penalty area between the goal area and the penalty spot at the same height. The right centre back C stands centrally and slightly offset behind the two forwards. The left centre back B and the right-centre midfielder G are placed at the edge of the penalty area, slightly to the left of the penalty arc. The right wide midfielder H is positioned in the central back area, and player F is placed between the two fullbacks A and D who are standing at the halfway line. Player/Position legend: Base formation GK = Goalkeeper A = Left fullback B = Left centre back C = Right centre back D = Right fullback E = Left wide midfielder F = Left-centre midfielder G = Right-centre midfielder H = Right wide midfielder I = Left forward J = Right forward

Procedure

As soon as E prepares to take the throw-in, the players run to the positions indicated by the movement arrows. The forwards J and I cross. J runs toward the near post, I toward the far post. Player C runs toward the thrower E to flick on the throw-in. The centre back B runs into the middle of the goal area and player G toward the far post. He also adjusts to player I, leaving him the space closer to the goal. Player H stays in the back area to provide cover and either finishes the throw-in directly or converts any rebounds and layoffs from the penalty area. The two fullbacks A and D as well as midfielder F stay back and watch for counterattacks.
