One Attacker vs. Two Defenders

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

A goalkeeper and three field players position themselves on the field as shown in the diagram. The two blue players act as defenders, the red player as the attacker. The attacker has the ball.

Procedure

The goalkeeper starts with a pass/throw to the attacker C waiting at the centre line. The ball-carrying attacker runs at defender B. He fakes dribbling alternately to the right and left. Player A covers Player B by mirroring C's lateral changes of direction. If Player B is beaten, defender A immediately engages Player C, and B covers A's back as quickly as possible, following Player A's lateral direction changes. The attacker tries to beat both defenders through fast-paced dribbling and situational use of feints to get a shot on goal.

Tip

- Initially, the striker should only approach the defenders at a moderate pace to give them the opportunity to coordinate their running paths. - The distance of the trailing defender to the lead defender should always be about 5 metres. - If the first defender is beaten, the trailing defender closes down the attacker. About 2-3 metres before him, he slows down, comes to a stop, and matches the attacker's pace while running backward with a lateral offset. - 1 full-size goal(s)
