Opposing Runs in Depth and Width

  • Age U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: Cones mark the positions, two poles or tall cones serve as a reference for the runs; in addition one goal and one mini goal as a counter-attacking target.

Equipment: 1 goal, 1 mini goal, 2 poles or tall cones, cones and several balls.

Players: Players A, B, C and D plus one defender; in addition a goalkeeper.

Procedure

  • Player A passes to Player B, who comes towards the ball.
  • Depending on the instruction or on the situation, Player B lays the ball off to Player C or D.
  • The team-mate who does not receive the ball runs in behind, is played into the gap and finishes.
  • If the defender does not follow decisively, Player B turns in the centre on the corresponding call and finishes in the 1 vs 1.
  • If the defender wins the ball, the defender counter-attacks on the mini goal.

Tip

  • Player A plays the pass with enough pace and adds the call to turn or to lay the ball off.
  • Player B lays the ball off with the foot furthest from the opponent when the defender follows closely.
  • Players C and D coordinate their behaviour with each other.
  • The receiver of the lay-off first moves away slightly so that the lay-off is not played square but diagonally backwards.
  • The ball is then played in behind with the first touch if possible; the player making the run pays attention to the right timing and runs at top speed.
  • Ideally the ball is played in behind when Player C or Player D is level with the poles or just before them.
