Outnumbered/Numbers Up - 5 vs 3 with Continuous Rotation

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

Three teams of five players each are formed. On one half of the field, it is always played 5 vs 3 on two goals. A second goal is placed on the halfway line. While two of the three teams play against each other, the third team waits behind the goal of the attacking team. The balls are distributed at both goals.

Procedure

Team A starts with all 5 players against 3 players from team B (the two missing players from B rest at the level of the halfway line on the sideline or, as shown in the diagram, beside the goal. They join the game once their team transitions to attack). After the attack is completed or when team B dribbles the ball across the halfway line after winning it, team B then plays with all 5 players against 3 defenders from team C. This continues in constant rotation. The defensive line is a back three, the attackers should play in a 1-2-2 formation if possible.

Tip

- The focus of this game form is on quick transition from defence to attack and on practising outnumbered/numbers-up play. - On offence, constant movement, communication and quick, precise passing is required. A staggered depth formation of 1-2-2 must be maintained, and moving in a flat line must be avoided (depth staggering means creating passing options). - The defenders always act as a unit and must not get too far apart. - The objective for the defenders is either to win possession or to push the ball carrier into a non-dangerous area to the side and block his passing lane toward the goal/teammate through double-teaming. - The task of the ball-near defender is to press the ball carrier. The other two defenders cover the space behind (defensive triangle). - 2 cones, 2 full-size goals
