Passing with Overlapping Runs II

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players

Setup

A square is set up according to the diagram with a cone in the centre. Two of the cones are double-occupied, the others have one player each. A ball should be at each cone. (1) Variation 1 (2) Variation 2

Procedure

Player A passes to B, who redirects directly to C. C then plays the ball into the run of D, while B, after his pass toward C, runs to overlap D. Then Players D and B work as a team and try to beat Opponent E either with Variation 1 (a feint) or with Variation 2 (a pass). Players B and D then line up behind E and A. B stands with a ball behind A, and E positions himself without a ball behind A. Now G plays to E, who redirects directly to C. C passes into the run of Player A, and E overlaps A. Then A and E try to beat Player F with the same two variations as before. E then stands with a ball at G's position, and E positions himself without a ball at F's position.

Tip

- This passing game is very running-intensive and demands a high level of football intelligence. - The players need some time to memorise the exercise sequence. - Good ball security and combination play are the goals. - Do not place the plant foot too far from the ball and make sure the players do not lean backward. - Demand pass sharpness and accuracy. - Accuracy before speed. - Concentration must be maintained. - Anticipation, perception, reaction, movement and action speed with and without the ball are constantly demanded. - Quick transitioning from attack to defence or quickly bridging a zone and creating new game situations are the objectives of this passing pattern. - Situational decision-making when beating the opponent (with or without involving the teammate). - Development of creativity paired with practising automatisms. - Take the correct position after completing the exercise sequence. - 5 cones
