Passing with Overlapping Runs in the Diamond Variation I
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression, Main point
Number of Players6 - 9 players
Setup
Set up a diamond/cross. Cone stations I and IV are double/multi-occupied; Cones II and III each have one player (see diagram).
Procedure
Player A passes to B and overlaps him. Player B passes directly to C. C then plays the ball into the run of A, who passes to Player D and then lines up behind him. Now D starts the same sequence with C and B in the opposite direction. Players B and C should be regularly rotated with other players.
Tip
First, practise the passing exercise slowly, then increase the passing tempo. The ball-expecting players always make a preparatory movement. A dynamic jump step sideways or backward, then moving toward the pass. The exercise is enormously running-intensive at fast execution speeds with six players. - Under time pressure, a very demanding, game-like passing game is required. - The ball-expecting players call for the ball with a verbal cue. - Pass timing and start timing are decisive. - Often the players pass faster than they run. - Maintain passing accuracy. - 4 cones
