Passing with Overlapping Runs in the Diamond Variation II
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression, Main point
Number of Players6 - 9 players
Setup
Four cones are set up in a diamond/cross as specified. The starting cone with ball as well as all other cones are double-occupied.
Procedure
At least one additional player stands behind each of A, B, C, and D. A passes to B and overlaps him. B plays directly to C. C plays the ball into A's run. A plays to D and lines up there. E starts the same sequence with F and G in the opposite direction to H. Players B and C, or their partners F and G, swap positions after each passing sequence.
Tip
First, practise the passing exercise slowly, then increase the passing tempo. The ball-expecting players always make a preparatory movement. A dynamic jump step sideways or backward, then moving toward the pass. The exercise is enormously running-intensive at fast execution speeds with eight players simultaneously. - Under time pressure, a very demanding, game-like passing game is required. - The ball-expecting players call for the ball with a verbal cue. - Pass timing and start timing are decisive. - The passing sequence should run synchronously. - Often the players pass faster than they run. - Passing accuracy is decisive so that the balls do not collide. - 4 cones
