Piggie in the Middle

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Three boxes are created using 8 cones, with each zone the same size. The cones denote the imaginary lines separating the zones.

Procedure

The two blue players pass the ball to one another in their zone as long as they like. It is their aim to get the ball past the red player in the middle zone to the single blue player in the end zone. If they achieve this, the blue player who played the cross-field ball follows his pass and the same exercise starts anew in the end zone. The red player tries to block and collect the passes through intelligent movement and awareness of space, however he is not allowed to enter the opponents' zone. Mtivationfor the red player: The player in the middle zone is changed at regular intervals. If the red player manages to intercept a pass intended for a blue player he wins. Alternative: To improve awareness the outer cones could be replaced with flags or larger cones.

Tip

8 cones, It is recommended that the players play with both feet. At first the passes should be played along the ground. Advanced players can attept to lob the ball over the 'piggie' in the middle. Coach the red and the blue players in the end zones. Precise, exact passing is extremely important for successful soccer. As a result passing should be regularly practised. It is important not to forget to correct mistakes and give correct demonstrations. - The standing foot should be 30-40cm to the side of the ball, in line with the ball. - When passing with the instep, the toes should point upwards, the ankle joint should be tensed and the upper body slightly leant over the ball. - Stand on the balls of your feet, the passing foot should be slightly raised to strike the ball in the middle. Bring your body over the ball and don't lean back. (Ball control is achieved using the same technique). - The foot should follow through after striking the ball. - Movement of the arms is important: When passing with the right instep the left arm should cross to the right hip; when passing with the left instep the right arm should cross to the left hip. - The player can lean back slightly when passing with the outstep. - When passing with the ball of the foot, the player approaches the ball diagonally with his body slightly side onwards to the ball.
