Reaction Sequence II

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players

Setup

Pitch: Play is on one goal. Three metres in front of it an agility ladder lies across, alternatively flat markers are used.

Equipment: 1 goal, 1 agility ladder, 3 balls.

Players: One goalkeeper and two outfield players who have three balls between them.

Procedure

  • The goalkeeper stands three metres in front of and one metre to the left of the left goalpost, facing the pitch.
  • Behind the goalkeeper stands a player with a ball. This player throws the ball towards the goalkeeper, who turns round on the command and catches the ball.
  • The goalkeeper then moves across the agility ladder with side steps, facing the goal.
  • Immediately afterwards the goalkeeper turns to the pitch, where the second player shoots at the goal. The goalkeeper tries to save this ball.
  • Straight after that the same player throws a second ball in a high arc towards the goal, and this one is to be saved as well.
  • The players then swap positions and start the next round.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • Choose the pace so that the goalkeeper can reach every ball but has to stretch to do so.
  • Change sides regularly so that the goalkeeper has to dive to the left and to the right.
  • By rolling out skilfully the goalkeeper gets back on the feet more quickly and increases the chances of reaching the third ball.
  • To roll out, the goalkeeper pulls the hands in front of the chest, the head towards the goal and the feet towards the pitch, tenses the half-extended legs and rolls out over the landing hands in the direction of the dive. Take the momentum along and get back on the feet after 1 to 2 rolls.
