Shooting Competition Between Two Field Players or Goalkeepers
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression, Main point
Number of Players1 - 5 players
Setup
Set up a small-sided field with two opposing goals as shown. One player (goalkeeper or field player) goes in each goal. The balls are distributed between the two goals.
Procedure
The players alternately act as goalkeeper and shooter. They try to score goals on one hand, but also to save the other player's shots. Both players shoot alternately. Each has the space between their goal-line cones and the two nearest smaller cones available for their actions. They have three touches per action: one for the reception/save, one for the setup, and one for the shot. If the ball bounces away during reception/save and leaves their playing square, or if they set up the ball outside their playing square, the opposite player may immediately grab a new ball from the goal and try to score. Play continues based on time or score targets. Option: Depending on group size, more or fewer touches can be allowed, or the playing area can be made larger or smaller.
Tip
- Pay attention to correct body posture when shooting: upper body over the ball; plant foot approx. 30-40 cm offset to the side of the ball, foot pointing in the shooting direction; arms swing along; the arm closest to the kicking leg follows the leg's backswing motion, the other is brought forward; eyes are on the ball at the moment of the shot. - Always have shooting drills performed with both feet. - Depending on the player's ball handling, ground shots, volleys, or drop kicks are possible. - For the volley shot, the upper body should be slightly bent forward and the ball struck at a low point (not too high). This gives the ball more power and greater accuracy. - For the drop kick, the ball is struck with the instep at the exact moment it touches the ground. - Correct goalkeeper behaviour: Push off on the balls of the feet, narrow the angle, quick reactions, incorporate throwing/punching variations, quick transition from saving to initiating/shooting. - 8 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
