Small-Sided Game First-Time Passes with a Numerical Advantage

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set End
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of about 30 x 30 metres with four cones and set up a goal on each of two opposite sides.

Equipment: 4 cones, 2 goals, bibs in three colours, balls.

Players: Two goalkeepers; the remaining players are divided into 3 teams with their own bib colours. The third team waits outside the playing area.

Procedure

  • The teams play against each other in a quick tournament format.
  • First two teams compete, with one of them playing with only three players and the fourth player waiting outside.
  • The team with the numerical advantage may only play first time.
  • As soon as a goal is scored or 90 seconds are up, the team with fewer players leaves the playing area and is replaced by the waiting team.
  • The team that previously had the numerical advantage takes a player out of the playing area and now plays with fewer players itself.

Variations:

  • Allow only ground balls.
  • Allow the team with the numerical advantage 2 touches.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The team with the numerical advantage should use the full width and depth of the playing area and create passing options with runs into the free spaces.
  • The team with fewer players should tighten the spaces around the ball and block passing lanes.
  • After a goal and the following change of teams the goalkeepers should play on again immediately wherever possible and take advantage of any lapses in concentration.
