Small-Sided Game One-Two

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set End
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out a square of 20 x 20 metres with four cones at the corners. Several small passing gates, each made up of two cones, are spread out inside the square.

Equipment: Cones for the corners of the area and for the passing gates, bibs, balls.

Players: Two teams. If the number of players is odd, a neutral player can be nominated who plays exclusively for the team in possession.

Procedure

  • The two teams play against each other in the square.
  • The aim is to play one-twos through the small passing gates.

Scoring: Every successful one-two through a passing gate scores one point.

Variations:

  • Make the passing gates in the centre smaller and score the gates differently, for example a gate in the middle of the area counts double.
  • Limit the number of touches in order to force quick decisions.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • When defending, force the player on the ball into zones without goals where possible and block the passing lanes in order to create tight spaces.
  • When defending, press on small mistakes in order to win the ball back.
  • When attacking, demand quick coming and going in order to open up spaces and create passing options.
  • When attacking, play the ball out of the tight zone in order to create width and stretch the defence.
  • Demand clear communication so that passing lanes and options are used better.
