Small-Sided Game Transition after Winning the Ball

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set End
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 20 x 25 metres with cones and place one full-size goal in the middle of each of the longer sides. Behind each goal a 10 metre deep zone is marked out, with one mini goal or dribbling goal in each of its two corners.

Equipment: Cones, 2 full-size goals, 4 mini goals, bibs in three colours, balls.

Players: Two teams, plus two goalkeepers and one neutral player in a separate bib colour.

Procedure

  • The two teams play against each other, the neutral player always acts for the team in possession.
  • The first team plays together with the goalkeepers on the full-size goals, the second team plays on the mini goals.
  • Once the first team has reached a set number of successful passes, it may finish on one of the full-size goals. Until the finish the goalkeepers are team-mates and only then try to prevent the goal.
  • If a goalkeeper receives the last necessary pass, that goalkeeper may finish on the opposite goal.
  • If the second team wins the ball, it tries to score through one of the 4 mini goals.

Variations:

  • Introduce a touch limit in order to increase the tempo of the game.
  • Have the passes counted out loud.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The players should always play out of the pressure situation and stay available for a pass and on the move both near the ball and in zones away from the ball.
  • The defence should make the game tight near the ball and block passing lanes.
  • After winning the ball, play should be taken out of the zone without delay in order to allow quick counter-attacks.
