Spatial Orientation in Numerical Superiority and Inferiority

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 20 x 20 metres with four cones. In the middle of each side stands a mini goal, next to it a flat marker identifies that goal in a separate colour.

Equipment: 4 cones, 4 flat markers in four colours, 4 mini goals, bibs, balls.

Players: One player waits in the centre and wears a separate bib colour, four players stand with a ball next to the mini goals and are identified by the letters A to D. The coach stands beside the playing area.

Procedure

  • The coach loudly calls out the letter of one of the outside players.
  • The player called passes the ball to the centre player and gets it back in a direct one-two.
  • Then, together with the two players standing to the sides, that player plays a 3 vs 2 against the centre player and the outside player opposite.
  • The team with the overload tries to score in the goal of the player opposite.
  • If the team with fewer players wins the ball, it may counter into one of the three other goals.
  • After the action has been completed, the centre player and the passer swap positions.

Variations:

  • Allow ground passes only.
  • Limit the number of touches.
  • Set a time limit.
  • Count counter-attacking goals double.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The team with the overload should stay wide and use the initial overload consistently.
  • Look for the quickest route to a goal.
  • The defence should close the centre, keep the opponents without the ball in the cover shadow and press the player on the ball.
