Sprint Dribbling with Ball Handoff

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

A cone square is set up using four cones. Two players with a ball stand at the starting position, and one player positions himself at each of the remaining three cones.

Procedure

The exercise can be performed in two variations. Variation 1: 5 players, 1 ball Player A sprints with the ball toward Player B. At B's cone, the ball handoff takes place at full speed, and then Player B sprints diagonally to Player C. The sequence continues as before (see diagram). Each ball handoff is done with a short pass (1-2m). Variation 2: 6 players, 2 balls. The same sequence takes place as in Variation 1. The two ball positions are diagonally opposite and each occupied by two players. This variation is only recommended once Variation 1 has been practised and executed well.

Tip

- When dribbling, the ball should not be more than 50 centimetres from the foot. Focus on small steps. - Accuracy before speed. - It is most effective to lead the ball with the outside of the foot and occasionally correct with the inside of the foot. - During the ball handoff, the ball must not be passed too hard. - The ball-expecting player positions himself slightly offset to the side so that the passer can see which foot he wants to receive the ball with. - The ball-expecting player starts his counter-movement simultaneously with the passer's backswing. - When receiving and taking the first touch, the plant foot is often too far from the ball or the player frequently leans backward. - When passing or controlling the ball, the foot should be slightly raised and swung downward toward the ball. - Many players control the ball with the instep or the outside of the foot. Receiving and controlling the ball with the inside of the foot, slightly leaning over the ball, is significantly easier as a first step. - 4 cones
