Through Ball with a Numerical Advantage

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 25 x 25 metres with cones and divide it into 3 zones with two lines running across. On two opposite sides there are 2 mini goals each.

Equipment: Cones, 4 mini goals, bibs in two colours, balls.

Players: One defender stands centrally on each of the two zone lines. Behind the mini goals on one side, 3 attackers wait with a ball.

Procedure

  • The 3 attackers set off into the playing area with the ball and try to score on the opposite goals. They may move freely in the playing area.
  • At first the defenders may only move on their line. As soon as a line has been played past, the defender concerned may leave it and defend actively backwards.
  • If the defenders win the ball, they may counter-attack on the opposite mini goals.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • Vary the starting points of the ball so that attacks come from all 3 points.
  • The attackers without the ball should create depth and width in order to be available for a pass, and keep moving.
  • Encourage changes of player and position in order to break up the static play and create new routes of attack.
  • The player on the ball should dribble at the defender in order to create free space, and only pass when that creates an advantage.
  • On losing the ball, switch quickly and make the area tight near the ball for counter-pressing.
  • The defenders should move on their line so that at least one opponent is in the cover shadow and the passing lane becomes tight.
