Through Ball with a Wall Player

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 25 x 25 metres with cones and set up 2 mini goals on each of two opposite sides. In front of the goals a 5 metre deep end zone is marked on both sides, with the middle zone in between.

Equipment: Cones, 4 mini goals, bibs in two colours, balls.

Players: Two teams of 3 players each. Two players of each team stand in the middle zone, the third in one of the two end zones.

Procedure

  • A 2 vs 2 is played in the middle zone, both teams try to play the pass to their team-mate in the end zone.
  • If that succeeds, the player from the end zone may move into the centre and the team tries, with a numerical advantage, to score on one of the opposite goals.
  • The players in the end zones are changed regularly.

Progression:

  • Demand a minimum number of passes when in numerical advantage in order to increase the touches and the combination play.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • Allow only ground balls, that makes ball control easier and keeps the game quick.
  • The players should get free behind the back of the opponent in order to create space and be available for a pass.
  • After the pass in behind, the players in the centre should get free immediately in order to exploit the numerical advantage.
