Warm-Up Finishing

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Progression
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Play takes place in one half of the pitch towards a full-size goal. Flat markers mark four positions: Position 1 on the left in front of the penalty area, roughly on the extended left penalty area line; Position 2 on the same line closer to the goal at the front left corner of the penalty area; Position 3 out on the right, considerably further away from the goal; and Position 4 to the right of the centre just in front of the D.

Equipment: Flat markers, balls, 1 goal.

Players: There is one player at each of the four positions. The remaining players wait behind Position 1 and Position 3, each with a ball. A goalkeeper is in the goal.

Procedure

  1. Player 1 rolls the ball forward and plays a double one-two with Player 2.
  2. Player 2 takes the ball with the inside of the left foot and shoots at the goal with the right foot.
  3. Player 2 then becomes part of the action with Player 3 and Player 4.
  4. Player 4 gets away from the opponent and receives a pass from Player 3.
  5. Player 3 rolls the ball forward briefly and passes to Player 4, who moves it on out to the wing.
  6. Player 3 follows the pass out to the wing, while Player 4 moves towards the penalty area and waits level with the far post.
  7. Player 2 runs to the near post, Player 3 takes up the space between the penalty spot and the goal area.
  8. Player 3 crosses from wide into the penalty area, where Player 2 finishes at the near post or Player 4 at the far post.

Variations:

  • After a few rounds change the shooting leg, for example the outside of the left foot instead of the inside of the right.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • Watch out for quick changes of position, so that the sequence stays fluid. The goalkeeper plays the balls back, and the players collect balls that are further away themselves.
  • Pay attention to the correct foot, the running paths, the freeing up of spaces, the movements without the ball and loud communication.
  • Do not stand still after the shot, but move straight into the next action.
  • Rolling the ball forward reflects what happens in a match, in which passes are rarely played from a stationary ball.
  • The space at the near post should be occupied as close to the goal as possible, because that is the shortest route for a ball from out wide. At the far post it is more a case of covering the cut-back area, because a player gets forward more quickly if the ball slips through.
