Wing Play - Crossing IX

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

On the end line of the field, set up a goal with a goalkeeper inside. 8 field players are positioned on the field as shown in the diagram. On the left/right wings, two players stand 10-15 metres apart. The two strikers take their positions 10 metres apart at the level of the penalty area line. The remaining players line up in pairs behind players B and C. The balls are in the centre circle.

Procedure

Player C plays a diagonal ball into E's run (1); E lays the ball back for the oncoming player A (2). Players B and C run toward the penalty area; 2-3 seconds later, D and H start into the wide back space. A now crosses from the half-space into the penalty area (3). At the moment of the kicking motion, B and C make crossing runs, occupy positions at the near and far posts, and try to finish the cross. D and H finish balls that B and C cannot reach.

Tip

- The strikers make crossing runs toward the near and far posts. - When crossing, it is important that the players start moving after the second-to-last pass and switch positions explosively at sprint speed just before the crosser's kicking motion. - The crossing players/attackers must not start too early. - Make sure the practised movement patterns lead to a fast, fluid overall movement. - The gaze should regularly be lifted from the ball (alternating between looking at the ball and looking forward). - The player expecting the pass makes a short counter-movement simultaneously with the passer's kicking motion. - The pass should be played into the running path of the player expecting the ball. - The passer must observe the running path of the player expecting the ball. - 1 full-size goal(s)
