Wing play/Crossing XV

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

A goal is set up on one end of the field with a goalkeeper. 8 field players are positioned as shown in the diagram. Two players go to each wing, spaced 10-15 metres apart. The two strikers take their positions 10 metres apart at the level of the penalty area line. The remaining players line up in pairs behind players B and C. The balls are at the centre circle.

Procedure

Player C plays a half-diagonal pass to player A (1) and moves together with player B into the area in front of the penalty area. A passes the ball directly to striker I who comes short (2). I now passes toward the corner flag/end line into the run of player E (3) and moves together with his strike partner J into the penalty area. E crosses the ball directly into the centre (4), where I and J cross and try to finish. B and C go for balls that come into the central space behind, H and D for those that go to the right side of the space behind. A runs toward the starting position of E to cover E from behind and be available as a passing option for a back pass. Afterward, the players return to their starting positions and the next pair moves up to replace B and C.

Tip

- The strikers cross toward the near and far post. - When crossing, it is important that the players start moving after the second-to-last pass and just before the crosser's backswing, explosively switch positions at sprint speed. - The crossing players / attackers must not start too early. - Ensure that the practised movement patterns lead to a fast, fluid overall movement. - The eyes should regularly leave the ball (alternating between looking at the ball and looking ahead). - The player expecting the pass makes a short counter-movement at the same time as the passer's backswing. - The pass should be played into the path of the player expecting the ball. - The passer must observe the run of the receiving player. - 1 full-size goal(s)
