Wing Play with Defender IV

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

A goal is set up on the end line of the field with a goalkeeper inside. 9 field players are positioned on the field as shown in the diagram. Two players are placed on each wing (left/right) at a distance of 10-15 metres from each other. The two forwards take up their positions 10 metres apart at the edge of the penalty area. Two defensive players position themselves in the cone gate on the left side at penalty area height. The remaining players line up in pairs behind players B and C. The balls are in the centre circle.

Procedure

The drill begins with a pass from player B to the forward J, who checks short to receive (1) and lays the ball off directly to C (2). Player C then passes diagonally into the run of player A (3), who now has 2 playing options: a) Yellow sequence, 4 - 4.1.2: Ball reception and speed dribble (4) followed by a pass to the overlapping player E (4.1). E tries at maximum speed to dribble past the defensive player in the marked cone gate (4.1.1) and crosses into the box at full speed (4.1.2), where the two forwards I and J, after crossing runs, take up positions at the near and far post, players B and C occupy the central back space, and D and H occupy the wide back space to try to convert the cross from their respective positions. b) Red sequence, 4.2 - 4.2.2: After receiving the ball, player A makes a speed dribble toward the cone gate and tries to dribble past the second defender (4.2). He can then either cross into the penalty area, where the two forwards I and J, after crossing runs, take up positions at the near and far post, players B and C occupy the central back space, and D and H occupy the wide back space to try to convert the cross from their respective positions (4.2.1), or shoot on goal himself (4.2.2).

Tip

- The forwards cross toward the near and far post. - When making crossing runs, it is important that the players explosively switch positions at sprint speed just before the crosser prepares to deliver the ball. - The crossing players/attackers must not start too early. - The crosser should deliver sharp, precise passes. - The defenders should close down the path to goal. Position offset to the side so the attacker must choose the path away from goal. - The defensive player tries to attack the attacker as early as possible so he cannot build up speed, and if possible positions his body with the shoulder forward between himself and the attacker. - Both defensive players are positioned offset to the side and forward. - The player expecting the pass makes a short check-away run at the same time the passer begins the passing motion. - The pass should be played into the running path of the player waiting for the ball. - The passer must observe the running path of the player expecting the ball. - The speed dribble by one of the two wing players E or A must be explosive. - 2 cones, 1 full-size goal(s)
