Zone Control

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of 20 x 20 metres with cones and divide it into four equally large zones with further cones at the middle of the sides.

Equipment: 8 cones, bibs in three colours, balls.

Players: Two teams as well as one neutral player in a separate bib colour.

Procedure

  • The two teams play to keep possession across the whole area; the neutral player always acts for the team in possession.
  • The aim is to control the ball once in each of the four zones with ground balls.

Scoring: A point counts when a team has received a pass and played it on in every zone without an interruption by the opposition.

Progression:

  • For a point every player of a team has to have touched the ball in every zone.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The team in possession should occupy the width of the area and create passing options near the ball.
  • It should offer options in order to play out of the tight zone or to keep the ball in a tight space.
  • The players without the ball should act flexibly so that the play does not stall.
  • The defending team has to tighten the playing area near the ball so that the passing options are in the cover shadow and the player on the ball comes under pressure.
